昆虫学博士麦迪走马上任美国农业部专门研究昆虫部门的负责人，事业正面临蒸蒸日上之势。然而繁忙的工作却导致了她与男友丹的关系恶化，就在双方的感情陷入危机之时，麦迪又迎来了工作上的一大难题——变异的蝗虫正席卷全美。原来这种变异的蝗虫是麦迪管辖的C-12实验室的彼得博士通过杂交的方法培育出来的，他的初衷只是单纯地为了科研目的。
